Door de populariteit van Within Temptation en Evanescence is gothic metal hot! Geen wonder dus dat er ook lokaal heel wat groepen zichzelf in de kijker willen spelen. Eentje daarvan is Valkyre, dat zich met zijn demo 'Consolamentum' maar al te graag kenbaar wil maken aan een horde metaalhoofden.
Een goedkope synthklank en bizarre timing, dat is het eerste wat door de speakers komt als de cd zich op gang trekt. Ook de eerste noot die zangeres Mieke op het schijfje plaatst, is een beetje aarzelend. Het lijkt er dan ook meteen op dat 'Consolamentum' - net zoals zoveel demootjes in dit genre - hopeloos de mist in gaat.
Dat is echter buiten Valkyre gerekend, want de groep weet zich razendsnel te herpakken. Eens de eerste song wat gevorderd is, krijg je namelijk een geheel te horen dat een hecht totaalgeluid weet neer te zetten. Het oudere werk van After Forever is nooit veraf.
De vergelijking met die groep mag trouwens niet verwonderen, de stijl van beide bands is zo goed als identiek. Het draait bij Valkyre immers om typische gothic metal waar een grote rol is weggelegd voor de zang en keys. Als kers op de taart komt een viool de sound nog wat aandikken.
Op vlak van samenstelling is 'Consolamentum' dus overduidelijk een schoolvoorbeeld van hoe het moet, ook al zijn de melodieën soms net niet krachtig genoeg om een theatrale sfeer op te voeren. Aan de andere kant is het gitaarwerk op 'Consolamentum' vaak wel een pak leuker dan wat de norm is in dit genre.
Uiteindelijk blijkt deze demo dan ook allesbehalve een misser te zijn. Op enkele schoonheidsfoutjes na laat Valkyre namelijk horen dat er nog beginnende groepen zijn die de fundamenten van gothic metal wel goed kunnen leggen. Er mogen dan wel tal van - soms grote - knipogen uitgedeeld worden aan bekendere bands, toch bewijst 'Consolamentum' dat er in Valkyre potentieel genoeg zit om ze een welverdiende kans te geven.

The new Belgian atmospheric gothic/folk metal band Valkyre introduces them with this 3-track promo-CD, although mine stops after 2 songs. The band is the new project of former founder and by now ex-Sengir guitarist Kris Scheerlinck. How the split with his former band came about is still not completely clear, but it's sure Kris came out of it extra strong. Valkyre goes a step ahead than Sengir and moves in the folk/gothic. The 2 songs on my copy are of such a level they can easily gather themselves in the top class of this genre. A cheerful mood and pleasant feel is the effect of great melody lines and lovely fragile intermezzos, created by solid compelling guitar work, dramatic violins and propelling drumwork. The prominent keys control the music and gives the sound most of the sensitive atmosphere, a flavour of romance and the necessary bombast. The beautiful passionate clear female vocals are a bit sensual and mysterious. The use of a choir gives the whole a bit more profundity. Although the overall sound is cheerful they are able to give it a slight gloomy touch. Valkyre could grow out to be a big one, that's for sure.

Le groupe Valkyre est composé de 8 membres : Mieke Diependael au chant, Kris Scheerlinck et Gert De Groot aux guitares, Fred Stiens à la basse, Gaelle Pruvost aux claviers et aux choeurs, Joris Derder au violon, aux choeurs et à l'orchestration, de Matijs Vanderberghe à la batterie et enfin de Marcel Van Montfort à l'orchestration, aux choeurs et en voix "invitée".
Pour les avoir vu au Raismes Festival, je peux vous assurer que le groupe utilise bien l'espace scénique.
La musique est écrite par Joris Derder et les paroles sont de Mieke Diependaele. Le groupe joue un métal folklorique très mélodique. La démo du groupe contient deux titres "A Good Day To Die" et "Beziers". La chanteuse Mieke a un joli timbre de voix, de plus les choeurs donnent encore plus d'impact à cette voix et fait de ces morceaux des morceaux pratiquement symphoniques à certains moments et l'utilisation du violon est tout bonnement sublime. il donne des mélodies magnifiques mais aussi beaucoup d'émotions aux morceaux. Les parties claviers sont très bonnes et donnent également de très belles mélodies.
Chaque musicien a sa place dans le groupe, car vu le nombre on pourrait effectivement se poser la question s'il n'y a pas trop de monde sur scène ! et bien non !!! Les guitares forment un bon duo et la rythmique est bonne.
C'est l'un des groupes que nous chroniqueurs (Fabien et moi) avons remarqué le plus sur la scène "découverte" du Raismes. Un groupe qui nous a beaucoup plus par son style de musique mais aussi par sa prestation sur scène. Un groupe qui a par ailleurs beaucoup plu au public.
Retenez bien ce nom Valkyre, un groupe dont on entendra parler dans les années à venir.

Onlangs viel bij mij thuis de demo cd van Valkyre op de mat.
De demo bevat 3 nummers wat intotaal goed is voor vijftien minuten luisterplezier.
Valkyre zag eind 2004 begin 2005 het levenslicht en is opgericht door ex Sengir gitarist Kris Scheerlinck. Reden genoeg voor mij om zijn nieuwe band uit te proberen.
De band maakt melodieuze gothic metal.
Zoals bij veel gothic metalbands op dit moment staat ook bij Valkyre een zangeres achter de microfoon. In Mieke Diependaele heeft de band een uitstekende zangeres in handen. Mieke beschikt over een zeer warme mooie stem en wat ik zelf heel belangrijk vind is dat ze ook zeer goed verstaanbaar zingt.
Haar stemgeluid vind ik persoonlijk zelfs zo goed dat ze meteen naar mijn top tien lijstje van beste zangeressen in de metalwereld is gekomen! Nu over de nummers van de demo cd. Het openingsnummer is ''A good day to die'' een lekker pakkend nummer met veel viool erin. Daarna het prachtige ''Bêziers'' Dit nummer vind ik het hoogtepunt van deze demo.
Het laatste lied is ''Procession'' In dit nummer is veel gebruik gemaakt van koorpartijen.
De structuur en geluid van dit nummer doet mij sterk denken aan het oude werk van Tristania.
Na alles geluisterd te hebben kan ik eigenlijk geen enkel min puntje ontdekken.
Valkyre biedt kwaliteit en gaat zeker zeer groot worden. Ondanks dat de band nog maar amper twee jaar bestaat zijn ze wat mij betreft al door de demo periode heen en zijn wel al toe aan een full length album!!!

This is a very interesting musical proposition from the band Valkyre. They have a sound that we aren't used to listening to in our days, because simply you cannot categorize it. They have operatic female and male vocals and they also use the violin except for the classic rock/metal instruments. In their music they combine the operatic feeling of EPICA and THERION, the renaissance atmosphere of the last 2 KAMELOT albums and finally the folk orientations that derive straight from SKYCLAD. The production is very professional and has nothing to envy from other official releases. The 3 compositions that are included here are very good and in general I believe that this is a band that is worth the attention both of the fans and the audience. Valkyre is a very young Belgian band. The band was formed by Kris Scheerlinck after he left Sengir. Since he was one of the musicians he decided to create a new band called Valkyre. When the band was completed they recorded their first demo, On Both Sides We Pray. This album just asked to be reviewed.
The demo has three songs on it and two of them are written by Kris. The first one is A Good Day to Die. The intro is very nice, guitars and violins play the same part after eachother. The folky intro is followed by a great metalriff. The singer Mieke Diependaele has a very light voice, she doesn't have the strenght I feel with other singers. But still her voice brings me to the essence of this music, it is very nice. And furthermore her voice is not like the most of the female vocals nowadays. I like it. The Gregorian choirs finish this only song that was written by Joris Derder.
Beziers is the second piece of the demo. This song is more catchy and has the albumtitle in the lyrics. The instruments are very well played. And this song is a very strong and catchy one. After the last song I am sure this is a good band. Procession is a great metalsong and it combines the good parts of all influences of Valkyre.
Valkyre might be a young Belgian band, but nevertheless it is a very talented one. We will hear a lot more of this band. That's for sure.

Wantijfestival Indoor klinkend succes!
De Belgische formatie Valkyre stal de harten van gothic minnend Dordrecht.
Om 23:00 uur zou de (voornamelijk) Vlaamse band Valkyre beginnen met spelen en ik wilde geen noot missen van deze metalgothicfolk-band. Onze onderburen staan immers niet onbekend om indrukwekkende bands.
..";Wat ga je over deze band schrijven?" werd mij gevraagd toen de band nog niet koud 3 minuten op het podium stond. "Dat zij en niet Leaves' Eyes op Wantijpop 2005 hadden moeten staan" antwoordde ik.
Voordat de volledige band opkwam was een middeleeuwse draailier te horen. Toen de mist optrok zat er rechts op het podium dan ook een draailierspeler, Marcel van Montfort . Niet lang daarna kwamen ook drummer Matijs Vandenberghe, bassist Fred Stiens, violist / zanger Joris Delder, keyboardiste Gaelle Provost, zangeres Mieke Diependaele en de twee gitaristen Kris Scheerlinck en Gert de Groot op. Direct al de nodige sfeer op het podium dus, niet veel later gevolgd door minstens evenveel sfeer in de zaal.
Valkyre liet direct zien geen kloon te! zijn in de Within Temptation hype. Door live te spelen met een doedelzak en een viool brengt Valkyre de gothicmetal naar een eigen maar vooral hoger niveau.
En ook al bestaat de band uit doorgewinterde muzikanten, dat is toch een enorme prestatie voor een band die net een jaar bezig is en nog niet eens een demo-cd uit heeft.
Marcel ruilde de draailier zo nu en dan in voor een doedelzak of een fluitje Het melancholische in de muziek deed me veel denken aan My Dying Bride, maar dat gebeurt al snel met gothic metal waarin viool wordt gespeeld. Ook al hebben ze er nu minstens één bewonderaar bij, ik sluit mijn oren niet voor de zang. Die is namelijk weliswaar mooi, maar niet echt heel bijzonder te noemen.
Zangeres Mieke Diependaele compenseert dat door lekker te dansen (leg de nadruk waar je wilt, op lekker of op dansen) en violist Joris Delder gaat hierin vrijuit omdat hij naast zingen immers ook viool speelt. Overigens kan de mindere zang ook liggen in het feit dat ik een halve meter van dboxen stond tijdens het optreden. Hoe dan ook: een muzikant in de band die ook zingt (of zelfs grunt?) en deze band zou bij mij direct op nummer 1 komen te staan. Dat dit de soort band is waarin ikzelf ook het liefst zou willen spelen maakt natuurlijk nog niet dat ik ook voor het zeggen heb wat ze moeten doen. Kortom: Valkyre moet gewoon lekker zo doorgaan, dan gaan ze nog ver komen. En hopelijk ook af en toen nog in Dordt.
Zoals ook op Wantijpop werden de schema's strak gehanteerd. En dat betekende dat Valkyre na twaalf uur geen noot meer mocht spelen. Omdat ik bang was dat de betovering verbroken zou worden ben ik toen ook weggegaan.
Het scheelde weinig of ik had zaterdag IMP, een trashpowermetalband die ik beslist wilde zien, gemist. In vervoering van Valkyre had ik zelf weer naar mijn gitaar gegrepen en was daardoor een beetje de tijd vergeten.

They drove all the way from France for 4 hours to get to the Archeon because of the weather. Then they were told they could only play 4 songs, which was a pity for they were the most renewing band of the day, the most pleasant surprise.
Music
How daring to perform a cover of Lacuna Coil. But as I said they were
a pleasant surprise and so was this song. With Joris performing the
male vocals and Mieke the female vocals they make a great duo. Even
though Mieke does not (yet) have the emotional power of the original
song this was not a bad cover at all. Mieke has a good voice but
sometimes she pushes a tune out and that is a pity, to forced. During
'Don't Be Sad' there was a beautifully sung canon between Mieke and
Gaelle (keys). The violin of Joris makes this music special, it give
them their own distinct sound. Also during 'A Good Day To Die' the
keys of Gaelle are wonderful to hear, very sweet and soft tunes.
Performance
With eight band members the stage was very full during this
performance but they did the best they could, giving each other some
space to move. They also give their all to make the best of the time
they have today. Mieke is sometimes so concentrated she frowns. Joris
has a great stage performance, you can see him enjoying himself and
looking for contact with the audience. Kris (guitar) had some space to
head bang a few times, but all in all the band members were quite
calm.
